Do You Have A Dream?

When I was a child, I dreamt of being a lawyer and living on Park Avenue in New York City. Where I got this notion from, I have no idea. I am not a fan of the city and having a job that requires fighting with people all day does not appeal to me.

This time of year, many of our inboxes and news feeds are filled with resources to help us rediscover our dreams, whether they are the long-lost ones of our youth or new ones for the season we are in today. It’s good to have a vision for our lives. Without it, where is our hope?

“Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but when the desire comes, it is a tree of life.” (Proverbs 13:12 NKJV)

The Bible tells us that without hope, our hearts are sick or saddened. Deferring hope for long periods of time leads to a state of hopelessness and despair. Clearly NOT what God wants for His children, nor the life that Jesus died for us to have (John 10:10).

We know that God has a purpose for everything He creates (Jeremiah 29:11), and that includes you and me. We also know that He has a book written about each one of us that was penned before we took our first breath.

“Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed. And in Your book they all were written, The days fashioned for me, when as yet there were none of them.” (Psalm 139:16 NKJV)

So the million dollar question is – How do I find out what God’s plan is for my life?

Don’t we all want to live out His plan instead of wasting time on our own feeble attempts? Don’t we all want to experience success? Of course we do! Just like anything we want to learn, we have to start by studying it, right? You and I didn’t learn our trades without some sort of preparation.

To learn why you were created, we have to get to know our Creator and the promises He has for each of us. We do this by reading the Bible.

Next, we spend time with God, talking to Him and listening for His voice, knowing that He speaks to us all the time. To know God’s voice, you have to know His Word.

While God mostly talks with us through His Word, sometimes He will speak through people, a friend, a pastor, or co-worker. The point is – pay attention! Don’t be in such a hurry that you miss Him.

Then, take a step in faith in the direction you think God is leading you. Bring Him into your endeavors as you would a trusted partner. Consult with Him and listen for His wisdom. God honors our faith, and He will be there to cheer us on or pick us up if we fall.

Here’s the thing: Dreams will remain dreams unless we take action. Not just any willy nilly action, but rather faith-filled steps according to God’s direction, involving Him along the way.

“Unless the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain who build it.” (Psalm 127:1 NKJV)

This week, as we honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his big dream, I want to encourage you to dream big. Get a God-sized dream for your life, knowing that when you dream with Him, nothing is impossible (Matthew 19:26).
