Jen’s Gem: Speak life!

I’m not an artistic person. My drawing skills start and end with stick figures and smiley faces. I have many friends who are artists and are able to create beautiful paintings, lovely flower arrangements, gardens, and more. This is not me.

My creativity is with words. I use them to support my family and hopefully to inform my blog and podcast followers with the promises of God. I use them to make people laugh. I pray each day that God puts a guard over my mouth and my hands as I type so that my words never hurt anyone.

Words are powerful. They can heal or they can hurt. We’ve all been the victim of someone’s careless words that have damaged our self-esteem, betrayed us, or worse. On the other hand, hopefully we’ve also been the recipient of words of praise that lift us up, that boost our confidence, that breathe life into us.

This week, three of my clients sent me emails praising my work and thanking me for it. How blessed am I? As a freelance writer, I don’t get performance reviews that provide me with feedback on my work. There are no pats on the back or “good job” sentiments from my boss. Those words are long gone and honestly, not missed.

The words in the emails I received this week far outweigh any outstanding performance review I ever received. Why? They were unsolicited. They were not forced. My clients did not have to say anything. Each chose to do so on their own.

These simple acts of kindness gave me a much-needed boost this week. They put a smile on my face. They prompted me to give thanks to God for the amazing clients that He has given to me.

If I’ve learned anything over the past several years on my walk with God, it is that words are powerful. They change the course of history – our own, our loved ones, and the world. Think about it. The world was created with words as we see in the first sentences of the Book of Genesis:

“Let there be light…”
“Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters…”
“Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear…”

These statements go on and on with God speaking the entire universe into existence. “And it was so” follows these declarations. God said it. It happened. When the world was completed, He said some pretty powerful words about us (emphasis mine):

“Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth. So God created man in His own imagein the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”  (Genesis 1:26-28 NKJV)

“Our image. Our likeness. God blessed them.” We are made in the image and likeness of God. We have been blessed to live a prosperous life. We have dominion and authority over the earth. We have the power to create other humans, other eternal beings. No other creature can do this.

These are the promises of God that are available to everyone who believes in Him, has faith, and accepts His Son Jesus. As children of God and believers in Jesus, we can say the same things about ourselves,  our loved ones, and our present situations that God says and it will come to pass as long as we pray in Jesus name – the name above all names.

If God says you will be blessed, then you can say, “I am blessed!” If God says you are healed, then you can say, “I am healed!”  If God says you are loved, then you can say, “I am loved!”

However, many people walk around saying the exact opposite. “I’m poor. I’m sick. I’m unlovable. I’m tired.” Did you know that your mind believes whatever words follow “I am” as the truth? Because words have creative power, you are creating your life with every single positive – or negative – word you say.

Oh – and this is not only true for the words you say about yourself, but others.

It is not God’s will or desire for you to be sick or poor or hurt or unemployed. If you don’t believe me, go back and read that passage in Genesis above. However, if your words don’t align with His Word, then your life may be a bit of a hot mess right now.

“Life and death are in the power of the tongue.” (Proverbs 18:21)

I encourage you to find out what God says about you. Write His Words down. Use His Words. Only then will your life become the masterpiece that God intended.
