The other day I was out walking around my complex. Signs of spring are sprouting all over. Crocus buds have emerged from the depths. The snow has melted. Birds are singing. The former season has passed, and a new one has begun. Ahh…the circle of life.
This got me to thinking about trust. More so trusting God. Every season comes and goes under His mighty hand. We trust that winter will lead to spring and spring will lead to summer. We don’t even think about it, do we?
Oh sure, we sometimes wish the seasons we don’t like would pass quicker (guilty!) but we know like we know that the next season will come without any effort from us. God’s got this and He’s had it for millions of years.
Trust Comes Naturally—Even When We Don’t Realize It
If you’ve been an Elevate The Day subscriber for any length of time, you know that every Sunday morning, you’re going to get a blog post. You’ve received one since its inception in 2017. And if you have followed me for longer, then you’ve gotten a blog from me for a couple of decades. You trust me. You know like you know.
How did this trust get built? Consistency. Time. Experience. Knowledge.
Through my writings over the years, you’ve gotten to know me. Oh sure, not like my BFF’s but you know a lot about me. You’ve had some experience with me. Because of the consistency of the blog posts, you’ve come to expect that if I have sent out a blog for dozens of years, it’s highly likely that you will get a blog post this week.
How to Grow Your Trust in God Daily
Now, why am I parking on this. Like, ok Jen. We get it. You send out a blog every week. What does that have to do with God and trusting Him? Well, the same way we build our trust in people, is the same way we build our trust in God.
Consistency. Time. Experience. Knowledge.
Many people may not trust God because they have not witnessed His consistency and faithfulness in their lives. Perhaps it’s because they have no experiences with Him or, and this may be the most likely reason; they have no knowledge of Him and His ways.
Reaching the “I Know Like I Know” Kind of Faith
How do we get knowledge of God? We read His “memoir” – the Bible. That’s how we learn about Him. Jesus said that He only said and did what His Father said and did (John 5:19-20). Well, then if we study Jesus’ words and His life, then guess what? We know the Father.
So we know about God but how do we get to know Him? We spend time with Him and experience His hand in our lives. How do you do that? Look for Him. The sun is out. Who did that? The seasons changed. Who did that? You found a great job. Who did that? God did!
“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.” (James 1:17 NKJV)
This is how we experience God here on the earth. We look for all of the good in our lives and we thank Him for it because it all came from Him. Rinse and repeat. Do that enough and you will have built a trusting, lasting, personal relationship with Him.
All good right? Yet, there will be many things that will keep you from doing this. The world is full of distractions, stress, and negativity that will try to convince you that God isn’t real, doesn’t care, is aloof to you, forsaken you.
“I will never leave you nor forsake you.” (Hebrews 13:5 NKJV)
But we know these are all lies. Why? Because the Bible says so AND if you’re paying attention to the experiences and reading about the promises you have with Him, you’re seeing the exact opposite.
The question is…what or who will you trust? Will you trust in God who is trustworthy or in the world (people, places, things) who couldn’t be more untrustworthy? The decision is ours to make.
I know like I know that spring follows winter. You know like you know that you’re getting a blog post each week. When we can come to the “I know like I know” about God, then it doesn’t matter what’s going on around us because we can trust God not just in this season, but every season.
