Who’s Your Person?

My daughter’s friend recently shared with me that she has found “her person.” For those of you who may not know this terminology, it’s the Gen Z version of “soulmate.” This individual checks all of the boxes for someone she wants to marry one day. (Click here to listen to this message.)

I thought about this phrase the other day as I read my devotional. The entry spoke about how each of us is called to be each other’s “person,” not in a romantic sense, but in all areas of life. We are all called to show compassion, mercy, love, and grace to the people in our lives just as Jesus did.

We are to be God’s hands and feet, His “boots on the ground” to His children. What does that mean exactly? What does that look like?

Not to oversimplify, but it looks like Jesus. If we are not sure how we should behave, we simply need to look at Jesus and what He did when He walked the earth. He was the perfect set of boots on the ground, showing people the love of His Father.

How did He do this? Again, not to oversimplify, but He did what His Father told Him to do. He said what His Father told Him to say.

“For I have not spoken on My own authority; but the Father who sent Me gave Me a command, what I should say and what I should speak. And I know that His command is everlasting life. Therefore, whatever I speak, just as the Father has told Me, so I speak.” (John 12:49-50)

“The words that I speak to you I do not speak on My own authority; but the Father who dwells in Me does the works.” (John 14:10 NKJV)

Does this mean that Jesus was an automaton or robot? No! Of course not! He had a choice to do whatever He wanted to do. Yet, He chose obedience to His Father over His own will because He loved Him so much and He was moved with compassion when He saw people hurting.

“But when He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion for them, because they were weary and scattered, like sheep having no shepherd.” (Matthew 9:36 NKJV)

How did this play out to the people in Jesus’ time? How was He their Person?

  • When He saw that people were hungry, He fed them (Matthew 9:36)
  • When He saw that people were sick, He healed them (John 5:1-15)
  • When He saw that people needed forgiveness, He forgave them (Mark 2:1-12)
  • When He saw that people might lose their life, He saved them (John 8:3-11)

Jesus was the One they could count on. Jesus was the  One they called on when they needed help. Jesus was the One who would listen to their woes without judgement or condemnation. Jesus was the One who would love them in whatever shape they were in.

This is why Peter said that we are to cast all our care upon Him, for He cares for you.

Even if no one else cares about you, you can know for sure that Jesus does. If you’re in need of a “person,” look no further than Jesus. Unlike its human counterpart, He will never leave you nor forsake you and He will love you no matter what.

And, when you have experienced this for yourself, you can tell others about it and maybe become their “person” as they work through the trials of life.

How can you be the best person you can be? Do what Jesus did. Say what Jesus said. And just as He transforms Your life, you can help to transform other’s lives.

Make Jesus your Person today and watch what He will do for you and those in your life who need a Person too.
