Can You Handle The Truth?

One of the most iconic lines in cinema history was spoken by Jack Nicholson in the movie “A Few Good Men” when he was pressed by Tom Cruise to share the happenings at the naval base: “You can’t handle the truth!”

I have to wonder if the entire courtroom gasped at this response. “What does he mean? Have we been believing lies? What’s going on?” These would’ve definitely been the questions rolling around in my mind.

What is truth?
I listened to a teaching recently that talked about the difference between facts and truth. Honestly, I thought they were the same, but they are not. An example that’s coming to my mind right now is regarding the weather.

On a cloudy day, we do not see the sun (fact). But the sun is still there (truth). Now if we go around on a cloudy day saying it’s sunny, we are likely going to get a few stares. However, it IS sunny above the clouds. We just don’t see it.

Just because we don’t see something doesn’t make it untrue.

In the Bible, God tells us that through faith in His Son Jesus, we are forgiven, healed, loved, protected and lots of other wonderful promises. This is 100% truth because God is not a man that He should lie (Numbers 23:19).

Now, we may not SEE or FEEL like we are forgiven, healed, loved, protected, but that does not make it any less true. Again, God is not a man that He should lie so if He says it, we can bank on it.

Let’s look at an example:

You may have symptoms of an illness in your body. The facts are the symptoms. Runny nose. Headache. Sore throat. But the truth is God says you are healed. Which will you choose to believe?

Seeing is not believing.
When any trial or challenge comes against you, you can choose to focus on it and speak about it 24/7 OR you can choose to focus on the truth of God’s promises. You are not denying reality (facts). You are speaking truth. God’s truth.

Note that it is our choice what we focus on and speak about.

Our lives are only transformed when our thoughts, words, and actions align with God’s thoughts, words, and actions. This is why Jesus’ ministry and that of the apostles was so powerful. They got this simple truth:

“For all the promises of God in Him are Yes, and in Him Amen, to the glory of God through us.” (2 Corinthians 1:20 NKJV)

Focus on God’s Truth
Now, does this mean that the moment you get a sniffle that you will get immediate healing? Or when you get a bill that’s out of your budget that money will fall from the sky? I mean, it could. God is sovereign and can do whatever He wants.

However, the mindset that we should have whether these promises happen instantaneously or over time is that at the onset of the sniffle or the opening of the bill, that we stand on and speak God’s Word. I am healed. God provides for me.

This is the truth. It doesn’t matter what we see or feel. Jesus said “I am the truth.” In Him is all truth.

When we pay more attention to what God says, and how God sees us, that’s living in His truth. That’s healing, provision, forgiveness, protection, joy, peace, and so much more. Wow and woo hoo!

I can handle that!
