What Are You Reaping?

Last week, I finally had an opportunity to visit my garden. It’d been several days due to a span of rainy weather and some time constraints. Yet, when I arrived…holy lettuce leaves Batman! Talk about abundance!

As I perused the harvest, the first thing that came to my mind was Ephesians 3:20 –

“Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us.”

This was definitely an “exceedingly, abundantly, above” situation. It took me several minutes to figure out what to do first. Where do I start? I decided to pull up the radishes and as you can see, this yielded a bouquet!

Next, I harvested the spinach and arugula and let’s just say that neither of these will be on my grocery list for quite some time! I’m already enjoying the fresh greens in my salads.

Funny how a few seeds in a packet resulted in such abundance. But this is God’s design. This is how He works. He takes a little tiny seed and if planted in good soil and properly maintained, it blossoms into an amazing harvest.

Think about it…from the seed of Adam, we now have billions of people on the planet. From the seeds of the trees and flowers in the Garden of Eden, we now have countless trees and flowers all over the world. God is an expert at multiplication.

If we think about this in regard to our lives, the same principle applies. Individually, we are each a seed. God has planted us in the city, job, church, or business for us to “be fruitful and multiply.” It’s in our DNA. It’s part of who we are.

We were not designed to live as hermits (Genesis 2:18). We are meant to live in community with other people so that each of us can have an impact on the people in our lives, to share our gifts and talents in service of others.

Of course, what that impact will be is up to us.

We can choose to make a positive difference by being generous, patient, and loving to each other. Or we can choose the opposite by speaking unkind words and doing unkind things. The Bible tells us that we will reap what we sow.

Therefore, if our harvest (life) isn’t what we want, we have to examine the seeds we are planting (or have planted).

It’s a good idea to examine ourselves from time to time to see if we are living the life Jesus died for us to have (John 10:10) or, we are living below God’s promise of “exceedingly, abundantly above.”

Here are a few questions to reflect upon this week:

Where are the deficits in your life today? Where are you lacking or perhaps seeing no fruit at all? The

easiest way to find out is to examine your seed. What did you plant? Are you taking care of what you planted? Are you pruning what you planted to get rid of the things that are hindering growth?

If we want an abundant harvest, then we must plant the right and best seeds, tend our gardens regularly, and give thanks to our Father in heaven for the abundant harvest.

Then, rinse and repeat.
