I’d like to open up this week’s blog post with a question: What was the last really hard thing you did? Perhaps it was keeping quiet when someone was coming against you unfairly. Maybe it was a challenging project at work or perhaps cleaning out those pesky closets.
As humans, we like easy. We like done. Actually, we like “done for us” even more. Instant gratification is so embedded in our culture that entire businesses have sprouted up so we can have what we want, when we want it.
Can you say “Uber Eats?” “Instacart?” “Amazon Prime?”
Taking The Easy Road
We all want the quick fix and guess what? It’s not just humans in 2026, but many of our ancestors did too.
The Israelites did not want to go through the wilderness for forty years before getting to the Promised Land. They wanted to walk through the gates of Egypt and enter the “the land of milk and honey” (Exodus 33:3).
Abraham and Sarah likely did not want to wait twenty-plus years to have the child God promised them. They wanted the little tike the day after God told them about him.
Settling for Less Than God’s Best
Sometimes, because we want things the easy way, we may miss the full blessing of God. What do I mean by this? For example,
- Instead of waiting on God for the spouse that is best for us, we settle on someone because we got impatient or we think this person is all I can expect to get.
- Instead of waiting on God to put us in the best job, we settle on something less just so we can have an income.
- Instead of stepping out in faith in what God has asked or called us to do, we do smaller things because we’re too scared we may do the wrong thing.
Steps vs. Leaps of Faith
We’ve all been guilty of this playing small thing. I know I have. Yet if I’ve learned one thing about God is that He doesn’t think small. Just look at our universe. There’s nothing small about it! In fact, it’s so big that scientists are still discovering galaxies a b-zillion light years away.
Taking risks is scary but we know that without risks, there’s no reward. Sure, small risks get us somewhere, but what if God is calling you to something bigger? What if He’s asking you not to take a step of faith, but a leap of faith?
Now to be clear – this is not risk taking for the sake of risk taking. We do not leap before we spend time with God in prayer and in His Word to find out if that leap is what He is really asking us to do.
We do not want to get ahead of God, but rather take orderly steps, being led by the Holy Spirit. Just like we do not send our toddlers to the DMV to get a driver’s license, God does not want us taking big steps without being prepared and led by Him.
God’s Timing Is Best
Many people in the Bible were called to do whopper things for God, yet few, if any did those whopper things the moment God told them. Even Jesus did not step into His ministry the day after He was born.
It took 30 years before Jesus declared His identity and purpose. And when He did, it was no cake walk. He faced some tough opposition from the moment John the Baptist raised Him up out of the River Jordan until the day He hung on the cross.
“Do not fear, for I am with you; Do not be dismayed for I am your God.” (Isaiah 41:10)
The Bible tells us that in this life, we will face some hard things (John 16:33). Yet it also says that we are not to shy away from them. All things are possible with God means all things are possible with God…even the hard things (Matthew 19:26).
Whatever challenge is in front of you today, I want to encourage you to ask God how to get through it. Then, listen for His response and do what you sense He is calling you to do.
It may be a step or it may be a leap. It may be easy or it may be hard. Either way, God is with you and it’ll be worth it.
