A few months ago, the stopper in my bathroom sink broke. Since then, every time I accidentally dropped something in the sink area, I gasped, praying it would not fall down the drain, causing even bigger issues.
I knew that calling on a plumber to fix this minor mishap would be costly, so I decided to take matters into my own hands, which all failed miserably. Plumbing is not my lane.
There are multiple stories in the Bible of people taking matters into their own hands and having less than desirable results. Let’s look at a few examples:
When Abraham and Sarah grew impatient for the child God had promised them, Sarah gave Abraham permission to take up with her maidservant, Hagar. She did have a child, but this was not the child God promised them and a host of problems occurred. Yikes!
When the Israelites grew impatient waiting for Moses to come down from the mountain of God, they fashioned a golden calf to worship instead of God, forgetting that it was He who’d just saved them from imminent death by parting the Red Sea. Big mistake.
When Jesus and the apostles were in the Garden of Gethsemane on the night of His crucifixion, Peter cut of the ear of one of the soldiers who came to arrest Jesus, thinking he could save Jesus. Again, this was not God’s plan. But Jesus to the rescue as He healed the soldier’s ear.
I could list so many more, but I think you get the point. While we can certainly relate to each person and understand why they did what they did, the results were always less than stellar. Why? The Scripture from Isaiah tells us:
“For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways,” says the Lord. “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts than your thoughts (Isaiah 55:8-9 NKJV).
Instead of following God’s Word, each of these people followed the words of Frank Sinatra. They “did it their way.” And hey… no judgement as we have all done the same thing.
You see, God always has a better plan, a better way. If we want the best outcome, we need to align ourselves with what God tells us and do it.
You might be asking, “How do I know what God’s will is for my situation?” While I can’t answer that specifically, I can give you some insights:
- God’s will is in His Word. Every answer to every problem you have resides in the pages between Genesis and Revelation.
- God’s will never causes you to be confused. So if you’re twirling or growing impatient, it’s time to stop, pray, and listen.
- God’s will is always for our highest good.
My sink issue was resolved while watching a random TV commercial. The new drain stopper arrived the other day and I could not have been more excited! I’m so easy to please!
Out of the b-zillion commercials I could’ve seen on TV that night, how do I happen to see one that is the perfect solution? It was all God.
As simple and silly as it may sound, God loves me so much, He put an affordable solution right in front of me and now my drain is flowing perfectly. No more gasping when I drop something in the sink.
Bonus! It’s so fun to push the little blue button to open and close the stopper! Who knew? (See? I told you I’m easy to please!)
What do you need fixed in your life? Have you asked God for help? If you’re tired of taking matters into your own hands and not seeing the results you desire, try putting things in God’s hands.
He’s the best Fixer there is!
