Do You Need A Hug From God?

As part of my daily Bible study, I read a Psalm. There are 150 of them and many were written by David of “David and Goliath” fame. They are a beautiful collection of prayers, songs, and even some poems.

After reading several of them, I began to notice a pattern.  The first few paragraphs seem to start with a personal cry to God about the author’s current circumstances. However, after the “pity party,” the psalm ends with the author giving thanks to God for His provision, faithfulness, and mercy.

It was like the authors were saying, “Lord, here’s my plight. It stinks. I don’t like it. The world is against me.” But then after they blew off some steam and got their challenging circumstances off their chests, they acknowledged the greatness of God. They noted how much He cared for them, how He heard their prayers, and trusted that He would answer them.

The other day, I was reading Psalm 139 and boy did this one jump off the page at me. That day I was in need of some comfort, a heavenly hug if you will. After I read it, I felt as if God reached His hand out of heaven and said “I see you Jennifer. I got you.”

Many times, it may feel like God does not see us, hear us, or perhaps even know us at all. Yet, the first few lines of this psalm (as well as throughout the entire Bible) declare otherwise. (P.S. Just because we don’t feel God, doesn’t mean He’s not there. (Deuteronomy 31:6))

“O Lord, You have searched me and known me.  You know my sitting down and my rising up; You understand my thought afar off.  You comprehend my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways.  For there is not a word on my tongue, but behold, O Lord, You know it altogether.” (v. 1-4)

Wow!

God not only knows who we are, but He understands everything about us. He knows if we will go this way or that. He knows the words we will speak five years from now. He knows all of our ways.

This can either be extremely comforting or potentially disconcerting if we’re looking to hide some things from Him. (Spoiler…you can’t. He loves you too much to leave you. (Isaiah 41:10))

The Creator of the universe sees you and is there for you, whenever you need Him. He thinks about you 24/7. Remember your first crush and how you thought about him or her all the time? That’s what God does!

“How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God! How great is the sum of them! If I should count them, they would be more in number than the sand; When I awake, I am still with You.” (v. 17-18)

And if that doesn’t blow your mind, consider this:

God thought about you before He thought about creating the universe. You were on His mind

before the sun and moon ever came to be. If you’re a parent, I suspect you thought about the baby you wanted before you thought about how to decorate the nursery.

And guess what else? You and I were on Jesus’ mind as He hung on the cross. The joy of us spending eternity in heaven with Him enabled Him to withstand that horrible death (John 3:16).

If you ever thought that God has left the building, He hasn’t. If you ever thought that God cannot hear your prayers or see your tears, He does. If you ever need a virtual hug from your heavenly Father, I encourage you to click here to read Psalm 139

It won’t be long before you exit the pity party and begin praising God for who He is and all He has done.

God bless you!
Jennifer
