Do You Need a Friend?

Jen’s Gem: What a Friend We Have in Jesus

This morning as I was writing my blog post, I found myself stumbling. I couldn’t find a way to bridge the two concepts that were on my mind. Perhaps it was due to a late start as I overslept today. Perhaps it was simply because it wasn’t the right message for the day. I’ve learned not to force my writing or a message when it’s just not there.

On my way to lunch with a friend, the song “Bridge Over Troubled Water” came to my mind. I have always loved this long. It’s one of my all-time favorite Simon and Garfunkel songs. I began to sing the lyrics and it occurred to me, that while Paul Simon was not likely describing Jesus in his lyrics, they describe Him to a “T.”

I decided today that instead of my words, I would borrow Mr. Simon’s. I felt I was being called to give you a glimpse into the relationship you can have with Jesus if you so choose.Every line of this song is His promise to you and me. Every day if you are feeling down and out, if you are overwhelmed with life’s challenges, if the news of the day leaves you feeling hopeless, Jesus will comfort you. He’ll take your part. He laid down His life for you. He is your friend.

The final verse of the song sums up His promise to you. “Your time has come to shine. All your dreams are on their way.” Wow! This is the life God wants you to have. A life of hope, of dreams coming true, of strength, of abundance, and of good health. He spoke it and He cannot contradict His own Word. It is impossible.

I pray that you will take a moment to really read these lyrics. I pray they touch your spirit today. Download the song and put it in your daily playlist. Let it lift your spirit when the day becomes tough and you need a friend. Jesus is that friend.

He is your bridge over troubled water.

When you’re weary, feeling small,
When tears are in your eyes
I will dry them all
I’m on your side
When times get rough
And friends just can’t be found
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down

When you’re down and out
When you’re on the street
When evening falls so hard
I will comfort you
I’ll take your part
When darkness comes
And pain is all around
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down

Sail on, silvergirl
Sail on by
Your time has come to shine
All your dreams are on their way
See how they shine
If you need a friend
I’m sailing right behind
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will ease your mind
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will ease your mind
