Who’s By Your Side?

As the temperatures begin to drop here in Connecticut, it was time to clear out my balcony of summer flowers. This is a bittersweet project for me as it solidifies that my favorite season is over.

One of my plants is a geranium that was given to me as a gift when I moved to this condo five years ago. Since I keep it inside during the cold months, it has continued to bloom each year. Yet, it’s been looking a bit scraggly as of late and I was contemplating tossing it.

Then it occurred to me that I had two hanging baskets of geraniums that I was also considering tossing as I cleared my balcony. Idea: “What if I combined these into the larger pot and save them all?”

So, that’s what I did. Double win.

Even though I was tempted to toss the old plants, I was happy that I recognized that maybe they just needed a friend or two to boost it up and get it through the next season.

Isn’t that what we need at times too? When we are feeling weak or alone, isn’t it nice to have a hand to hold on to? A shoulder to lean on? Someone on our side?

I recently returned from a trip and on the plane ride home, I was blessed to sit in between a seasoned pilot, (also an ex-military man), and a flight attendant. Flying is not my favorite thing so having these “bookends” of safety around me, eased my nerves.

The pilot was friendly, funny, and answered all my inane questions like “How does this flying thing actually work?” Before I knew it, we landed and I thanked God for this “hug from heaven” that made me feel safe.

Life can beat us up sometimes. Our circumstances can seem daunting and overwhelming. Yet, if we are wise, we will remember that as believers in Jesus, we are victorious (1 Corinthians 15:57). No weapon formed against us will prosper (Isaiah 54:17) and God is always with us (Isaiah 41:10).

Our job is to stand in faith, believing that if God promised it, He will do it. His Word does not return void (Isiah 55:11). Unlike humans who break their promises (ok…maybe not intentionally), God never does. He always gives us what we need, and He knows what is best for us because He’s a good Father.

Knowing my trepidation about flying, God sent that pilot to build up my confidence and make me feel safe. Knowing how much I love my summer flowers, He gave me the idea to combine them together.

He knew exactly what I needed when I needed it.

God knows what you need right now too. He knows what is best for you. If we exercise our faith and don’t give up, eventually we will see it come to pass. Our job is to stay alert, be thankful, and not give up when it doesn’t happen in our timing.

As my good pal and Elevate The Day Podcast co-host, Karen Salisbury is always saying, “If it’s not good yet, God is still working on it.”

God gave me the idea to build up my flower pot so that it’ll bear even more blossoms next year. God

gave me that pilot sitting next to me to build up my confidence during that flight.

Guess what? God will give you what you need, when you need it. Stay in faith. Speak out His promises. Know that He will answer you.

Believe that God has your back always…whether you’re transplanting flowers on a balcony or when you’re tens of thousands of feet in the air.

P.S. If you are feeling alone or in need of a “hug from heaven,” then I want to encourage you to watch or listen to the Elevate The Day Podcast, “Do You Need A Champion?” to learn more about how our Father in heaven is by your side in all of life’s circumstances.
