How Are You Walking?

A visit to the podiatrist this week resulted in a diagnosis of inflammation in my big toe, which was causing pain while I walked. An orthotic along with anti-inflammatory medication should aid the healing process.

When the doctor asked me how long the pain had been going on, I told him several weeks. As the words came out of my mouth, I thought, “Why did you wait weeks before seeking help? Why did you live with pain when you didn’t have to?”

During my morning walk with my new orthotic, I noticed how secure my feet felt; “snug as a bug in a rug.” My toe did not hurt and there was a spring in my step. I even walked up a hill that I’d been avoiding. Victory!

Of course, all of this focus on walking this week brought this Scripture to my mind:

“For we walk by faith, not by sight.” (2 Corinthians 5:7 NKJV)

This is a truth that God is working with me on in this season, teaching me that it doesn’t matter what I see or what the circumstances are, God’s Word is true, and my faith needs to be in Him, not anywhere else.

If you believe that God’s Word is the absolute truth, then anything that doesn’t reflect this truth must be a lie. It’s just common sense, right?

For example, if I were to tell you the moon was made of cheese, you’d laugh in my face because you know I am lying to you. The truth is, the moon is made of rocks and minerals and stuff I don’t even know about, but it’s clearly not cheese!

So if God’s Word says that I am loved by the Creator of the universe (John 3:16), that I’m made in His image (Genesis 1:27), that He has forgiven my sins and healed me (Psalm 103:3), and that He will never leave me nor forsake me (Hebrews 13:5), then these are true statements.

Anything that contradicts these truths is a lie. Anyone who tells you or me anything different is lying. Here are some examples:

There may be times when you feel unloved or alone. Well, God’s Word said He loves you and is with you so you are neither unloved nor alone.

There may be times when you have sickness in your body. Well, God’s Word said that you are healed by the stripes of Jesus (1 Peter 2:24) so healing belongs to you.

There may be times when you feel guilt or shame over the dumb stuff you’ve done. Well, God’s Word says that your sins are forgiven and He’s forgotten every single one of them (Psalm 103:12) so you are in right standing with God because of Jesus.

Do you see a pattern here? It doesn’t matter what we feel or see, it only matters what God says. Now, this doesn’t mean we deny reality. The Bible tells us to call those things that are not as if they were (Romans 4:17). It doesn’t say, call those things that are as if they are not.

So if our reality is not lining up with God’s Word, then God must still be working on it and/or we may be hindering our victory by how we are walking and talking. What do I mean?

We have to make sure that our words line up with God’s Word. You can’t say “God loves me” and then say that you’re a low-down dirty dog. You can’t say God healed me and then say that you’re always sick. You can’t say God is blessing me and then say you’re broke. This is being double minded (James 1:8).

When we line up our words with the Word of God, trusting that He is true to His Word, then and only then will we have victory. Jesus said that He came that we’d have life and have it to the full (John 10:10), so if you and I are not experiencing this full life, we have to a) check our words and b) check our walk.

Our words plus our walk of faith are the victory. No orthotic needed.

P.S. If you’re not clear on the promises of God for your life, then I want to encourage you to watch or listen to the Elevate The Day Podcast, “Declutter Your Beliefs About God” to learn more about who God really is and how you can live the life His Son died for you to live.
