Are You In A Dead Zone?

It’s quite common that when I speak on the phone with my sister who lives on Long Island that she will hit a dead zone. The result is that either she is still talking and I can’t hear her or vice versa. Inevitably the call drops and one of us ends up calling the other back.

It seems odd that in 2026 there would still be dead zones, yet we’ve all experienced them. Our words go into the atmosphere, and we have no confidence that the other person has heard us. Then, when we reconnect, we have to repeat everything that was said while our communication was broken.

I have been spending time in the letters of the apostle John, who is known as the “love” apostle. Yet, in my reading this week, it was not the love theme that caught my eye. It was a verse in which he speaks about communication. Specifically, our communication with God.

“Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.  And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him.” (1 John 5:14-15 NKJV, emphasis mine)

Anytime we talk to God, we can be confident that He hears us. That’s good news, right? Great news actually! You may remember the old church hymn, “In the Garden” that speaks to this very thing.

“And He walks with me and He talks with me and He tells me that I am His own.”

Did you catch those two words – “talks” and “tells?” Yes, God speaks to us as well as hears us when we talk to Him. How does He do this? Primarily through His Word but we can also hear His voice if we will slow down enough, quiet ourselves long enough to hear it.

We serve a God who loves us and cares for us so much that He wants to talk with us and walk with us. We don’t serve a dead stone image or a wooden carving. We have a Father in heaven who wants the very best for us and can’t wait to spend time with us.

He loves the sound of our voices! Did you know that your voice is unique to you? No one else has it. So when you speak, God knows that it’s coming from you. How cool is that? Out of the billions of people on this planet, God knows that it’s you who is speaking. Wow!

This week, I’d like to encourage you to have a conversation with God. Take some quiet time and just be with Him. Ask Him your questions. Tell Him about your day or what’s troubling you. Thank Him for your blessings.

Then know – be confident – that He hears you because there are no dead zones in heaven.
