Is The Scale Tipped?

As the summer season approaches, I’ve been paying more attention to my scale. Some days it is my friend, while other days, I want to toss it out the window. It seems like it never truly reflects my efforts to eat healthy and exercise.

My son is repeatedly telling me not to weigh myself everyday due to the potential fluctuations of water and a myriad of other anomalies. Yet, for me, it keeps me in check. During my Bible reading this week, the topic of  scales was on my mind and so it came as no surprise while I was reading Psalm 91 that a few of the verses caught my eye.

I recently began reading this powerful prayer every day. If you are not familiar with it, I highly encourage you to check it out. (Click here) While I’ve read this psalm probably hundreds of times, the other day, something jumped out at me and I wanted to share it with you. Below is a small portion of it:

“Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him; I will set him on high, because he has known My name. He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him and honor him. With long life I will satisfy him, and show him My salvation.” (Psalm 91: 14-16 NKJV emphasis mine)

Let’s look at this because something seems out of balance. The first verse says what we do – love God. Yet, look at God’s side of the equation. Look what He does in response to our love for Him:

1.    God will deliver us.
2.    God will set us on high because we know His name.
3.    God will answer us when we call upon Him.
4.    God will be with us in trouble.
5.    God will honor us.
6.    God will give us a long life.
7.    God will show us His salvation.

Hmmm… So we do one thing and God does seven? Wow – that seems out of balance, no? And actually, if you read the entire Psalm, God’s side of the scale contains even more things. This is the goodness of God! Just look at how He cares for His those who love Him.

As a parent, I shower my kids with love and affection and would do anything to protect them and help them when they get into trouble. Why? Because I love them so much.

Yet, God is a waaayy better parent than I could ever be. Look at what Jesus said in Matthew – “how much more will your heavenly Father give.” Clearly we can see the “how much more” from Matthew in Psalm 91 where God’s gifts to us clearly tip the scales.

“So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give good gifts to those who ask him!” (Matthew 7:11 NLT emphasis mine).

An in fact, John 3:16 throws the entire scale out of the window. God loved us so much that He gave His one and only Son for us so that we could be in heaven with Him forever.

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. (John 3:16 NKJV)

I recently heard a message where the preacher said that many of our problems are because we don’t know how much God loves us. Once you get a revelation of this kind of love, the God kind of love, it truly is life changing.

The Bible tells us that God’s love is perfect. Human love? Not so perfect, right? Human love is

conditional, sometimes short-lived. God’s love is unconditional and eternal.

This week, I’d like to encourage you to read Psalm 91. (Click here.) And don’t just read it, but meditate on what each verse says. I guarantee that if you make this part of your daily routine, you will begin to see God’s love pour off the page and into your hearts.

And you’ll be so grateful for God’s scale, you’ll want to check it every day!
