What Are You Thinking?

I recently finished reading “Revolutionary Mindset” by Marvin Yoder. If there was ever a book I wished I had read when I was younger, it’s this. Put it on your “must read” list today!

The premise of the book is simple: If you want a better life, think like God thinks, say what God says. Do what He does. How do you do this?

The answer is simple. Read God’s Word. This is how you find out what God is thinking because it’s written on every single page. Next, change your thoughts, your words, and your actions to align with what God thinks, says and does.

In short, follow the example of Jesus.  Then you’ll be thinking what God thinks, saying what God says, and doing what God does.

In the Gospel of John, it says that Jesus only does and says what His Father does and says: (emphasis mine)

“Then Jesus answered and said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner.” (John 5:19 NKJV)

“For I have not spoken on My own authority; but the Father who sent Me gave Me a command, what I should say and what I should speak.  And I know that His command is everlasting life. Therefore, whatever I speak, just as the Father has told Me, so I speak.” (John 12:49-50 NKJV)

Why is this important? Why is it important to read about, think about, and speak the promises of God for our lives?

So many people are struggling with their identity, their purpose in life, their circumstances. Yet, the Bible is filled with all of the solutions to these challenges. If we don’t read it, we won’t know the solutions. And if we don’t know about them, how can we put them into practice?

We’ll just keep doing the same thing over and over expecting different results. Welcome to the hamster wheel.

If we want to make serious and lasting changes, we have to do a few things:

1.    Decide to make the change.
2.    Get help to make the change.
3.    Make the change.
4.    Rinse and repeat until we see victory.
5.    Start over with the next change.

This is an ongoing process throughout our lives if we want to have the life that Jesus died for us to have.

But here’s the good news, well great news really. We don’t have to go it alone. God is with us every step of the way. He’s our heavenly cheerleader!

The world may be against you. Even friends and family may be against you, but God is FOR you! He will never leave you nor forsake you (Hebrews 13:5). He is closer to you than a brother (Proverbs 18:24) and He will give you the strength you need to make it (Philippians 4:13).

It all begins with our thoughts. We are where we are because of our past thinking. Where do you want to be in a year? Five years? Ten years?

Change your thoughts today and you change your life tomorrow.
