Do You Need A Second Opinion?

A recent dental checkup revealed that I had four cavities. Four! I have not had a cavity since I was a child, so to have four all at once was a shock. I have no memory of getting a filling or any other “bad stuff” at the dentist.

I hear nightmare dentist stories from people so I know how blessed I am. I know nothing of drills, root canals, or other horrific things. I’ve gone for my bi-annual cleanings for 50 plus years and the only thing I walked out with is a goody bag.

After telling my daughter about my diagnosis, she asked who the dentist was. She then proceeded to tell me that this same dentist told her she had seven cavities and when she got a second opinion, it turned out to be only a few.

She advised me that it might be worth doing a bit of fact checking with someone else and…

I have ZERO cavities! ZERO!!  (By the way, I also have a new dentist.)

Had I believed what the first dentist told me, I’d likely be crying in my coffee right now. Yet here I am doing the happy dance.

There is much confusion in our world and it is hard to know who or what to trust. Growing up, when I saw Walter Cronkite on TV telling the world what was happening, I felt confident it was true. Today? Yeah, not so much.

For me, there is only one source of truth: the Bible. No matter what is going on in the world, no matter what news media you listen to or watch, you can always tune in to God’s Word and have peace and confidence that every single word is true. Every day. Every night.

What God said would happen, did. What God said will happen, will. What is true for me, is true for you. What was true for the people mentioned in the Bible thousands of years ago is true for the world today.

We can find comfort, peace, and security knowing that our Father in heaven cared so much about us that He inspired the writers of the Bible to record His words. I’m so grateful because when my world is turning upside down, I can open up to any page, any chapter, any verse and know what I am reading is God’s Word and it is true.

“All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:16-17 NKJV).

The world is spitting lies at us 24/7 but God’s Word is truth. Throughout the New Testament, Jesus quotes Scripture whenever He faced a challenge. He rebuked Satan in the wilderness with God’s Word. He spoke healing and blessings over thousands with God’s Word.

If you don’t own a Bible, I want to encourage you to purchase one. Sure, it’s readily available on your phone and via Google, yet having a hard copy that you can write in or highlight makes all the difference between simply reading it and studying it.

God’s will for you is in His Word. No second opinion needed.
