Purposeful Parent Tip: You Are Your Brand – Tell the World!
(Note: This is the fourth in a series of posts about the speakers scheduled for my upcoming Mom to Mompreneur Now! Tele-summit starting on October 9, 2012 at 1:00 pm.)
Many times when I introduce myself to someone at a networking event, I typically hear, “I just saw something about you somewhere – where was it again?” My response is usually a litany of recent mentions in various media outlets until the light bulb goes off and they remember.
If I’ve done nothing else in the nearly four years of being a mompreneur, I’ve done a pretty decent job of self-promotion. In many of my local circles, people know who I am and what I do. “Oh…you’re the mom with the baby journal business!” Close enough.
When I talk to other mompreneurs, this is the one area of their business they tend to shy away from. “I’m not good at promoting myself.” To which I say, “If you have a small business, you have to get good at this.”
Many women feel uncomfortable promoting themselves, not wanting to draw attention to their work. It’s not always due to shyness or lack of self-confidence, many times; they just don’t know how to do it.
“You’re everywhere Jennifer! How did you do that?” Simple.
I walked through every single door that was presented to me and in some cases, I just asked. This is how I became a contributing author to two books and a small business white paper, secured spots on radio and TV programs, was featured in various online and offline publications, and won awards for my baby products and my business.
In addition to walking through doors and asking, there’s one more activity I did. I networked. Like a maniac. Since starting my business, I have met more people than during my entire corporate career. One of the people I met was Mom to Mompreneur Now! speaker, Kathy McShane of Ladies Who Launch, Southwest Connecticut chapter.
I attended one of Kathy’s events and turns out we used to work for the same company! Small world. Kathy is a marketing guru. She has elevated the art of promotion to new heights for her ladies and guess what? They’ve achieved the success they dreamed of. How?
Well, with Kathy’s marketing prowess and connections, she is able to get her ladies in front of people they might not have been able to on their own. In short, Kathy presents the doors for them to walk though. How do I know? Because Kathy did it for me. That’s how I got my recent spot on Good Morning Connecticut.
In addition to promotion, Kathy knows the importance of having a solid marketing strategy that not only promotes your business but makes you money. Her strong marketing background in corporate as well as in owning her own agency, is what Kathy brings to the table when helping not only mompreneurs, but female business owners to succeed.
If you are challenged by self-promotion or lack a solid marketing strategy to propel your business, then you owe it to yourself to sign up for the Mom to Mompreneur Now! Tele-summit series and learn the art and science of marketing yourself to success with Kathy McShane.
