Ask and You Shall Receive

Purposeful Parent Tip: If you don’t ask, the answer is always going to be ‘no’.

(Note: This is the first in a series of posts about the speakers scheduled for my upcoming Mom to Mompreneur Now! Tele-summit starting on October 2, 2012.)

“Can I ask you something?” This is a question I get from my kids all the time. It always surprises me that they preface their requests with this question. My response is always, “You can ask me anything.” “But you might say no”, they will respond. “True. But if you don’t ask, the answer is always going to be ‘no’.”

As I’ve stated in this blog before, I was a ‘nose to the grindstone’ corporate career woman. I rarely asked for help from my colleagues because I did not want to appear incompetent. Despite being over my head multiple times, I forced myself to figure it out on my own.

That was just plain stupid.

Why, when I had hundreds of people available to me on a daily basis, did I waste the opportunity to call upon their expertise? I’m sure they would’ve welcomed the opportunity to help me.

I learned this lesson again in a recent webinar I took from the MasterMind guru, Jane Pollak. In one of her sessions, she provided a great tip. She told the attendees that

Jane Pollak

when we are stuck on something with our business or even personally, to send out a blind copy email to a handful of our friends and colleagues with the subject line of “Your Brilliance is Requested”. Now, who would not want to get an email like that?

She explained that we should keep these emails short and sweet. She also told us that this is not to be used for things like “Should I get a divorce?” or “Should I empty my retirement fund and fly to Fiji?” but rather smaller challenges like choosing a tag line for your business or finding a web designer. She also, and most importantly, suggested that we do not do this too often or keep going back to the same people all the time out of respect for their time.

I have utilized this tip on several occasions and I have gotten the most amazing feedback on the particular challenge I was facing. It saved me hours. And as a single mompreneur, my time is precious!

When it came time for my partner, Suzen Pettit and I to gather speakers for our upcoming Mom to Mompreneur Now! Tele-summit, Jane Pollak was one of the first people who came to my mind. Mompreneurs NEED someone like Jane to not only provide great tips like this, but to share her expertise on MasterMind groups and the positive impact they have to catapult small businesses to greater results.

I know Jane pretty well. I’ve met and conversed with her on multiple occasions in various networking groups and at other events. She is an unbelievable business coach, speaker, and author. In other words, she’s one busy lady with a clear vision of who she is and her business. What would she say if I asked her to participate in our brand new venture?

The words I speak to my children came rushing back to me. “If you don’t ask, the answer is going to be no.”

I emailed Jane a short note briefly explaining what Suzen and I were doing and before I knew it, a resounding “Yes” response came back to me. Naturally I was elated.

I was elated because all of the mompreneurs who will attend this event are going to get the benefit of Jane’s experience and insights. She, along with our 5 other speakers, will be sharing their wisdom at our tele-summit. Expertise you can get and you didn’t even have to ask!

Join us as Jane and all of our fabulous women business owners share their expertise, their tips, and their inspiration. You won’t want to miss this!
